Diana, marble. Diana was a moon goddess, helped women in childbirth and protected animals and nature and therefore also became the goddess of hunting. Here Diana is depicted hunting. She seems to be rushing forward in the hunt for game. She looks to the right and is about to pull an arrow from the quiver with her raised right arm while a deer rises at her feet. Her left hand holds a small cylindrical fragment, which was once a bow or a spear. She wears a short Doric chiton and a himation, a mantle-like garment, around the waist and sandals on her feet.

This sculpture is a replica of the so-called Diana of Versailles which today stands in the Caryatid Gallery at the Louvre in Paris. It is a partially restored Roman copy (first or second century AD) of a lost Greek bronze original attributed to the Greek sculptor Leochares, around 325 BC.
