Per Hasselberg (1850–1894) was a Swedish sculptor. La Grenouille, also known as The Frog, depicts a girl in her teens, sitting like a frog. In front of the female figure, a small frog is also depicted. Hasselberg got the idea for La Grenouille when his model sat down to rest. The figure is considered naturalistic, and can be seen as a symbol of the budding femininity of the early teens.

The French word grenouille not only means frog but is also slang for street girl. It has been pointed out that Hasselberg possibly intended to express the view at the time of a tension between the youth’s fine and animalistic features. Hasselberg was the first Swedish sculptor to receive a gold medal at the Paris Salon and he was a leading force in the Opposition movement (Opponentrörelsen) at the Swedish Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
