C.J. Jacobini, Amor, marble, signed and dated 1882. In classical mythology, Amor is the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection. He is often depicted as the son of the goddess of love Venus and the god of war Mars. Amor is also known by the name Cupid. ”Cupid’s arrow” is an expression meaning that the person struck by it immediately falls in love.

The sculpture stands on an altarlike table with recessed relief in sandstone and a lion head in marble. The relief and the sarcophagus on the front were taken from Queen Victoria’s Villa Svezia in Rome.
